Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan talked about the newest dramatic turn on the hit series "How I met Your Mother".
"I was honored to be able to do last week's episode," Jason Segel says. The episode, "Bad News," ended with Lily (Alyson Hannigan) telling Marshall (Segel) that his father had died. The show had played a misdirection game for much of the episode, focusing on Lily and Marshall's efforts to conceive a child before ending on the dramatic note.

Katy Perry to guest star on HIMYM
Pop star Katy Perry will guest star on an episode of CBS hit show How I Met Your Mother later this season as a potential love interest for Josh Radnor's Ted, CBS said Thursday.
The episode, titled Oh Honey, will see her play Zoey's (Jennifer Morrison) cousin, described as "a beautiful, naive girl who the gang resorts to calling 'honey'."
"Katy is a tremendous talent and we are delighted to be able to work with her," said Carter Bays, co-creator and executive producer of the show.

HIMYM's Carter Bays talks last night's twist: "Storytelling requires tragedy"
The morning after "How I Met Your Mother's" Jan. 3 episode, fathers across America no doubt received calls from their adult children.
In the wake of the heart-kick at the end of "Bad News" -- the sudden death of Marshall's (Jason Segel) dad -- a check-in with the parents seems to be in order.
"Well, my dad called," series co-creator Carter Bays tells Zap2it of the episode's aftermath. "I would have called him if he hadn't called me... it's one of those moments where you just want to talk to your dad."
The moment also caught a lot of fans off-guard. Hardly a cookie-cutter sitcom, "HIMYM" isn't all laughs -- but it's yet to go into territory as dark as this. "The show has always explored the various mileposts of life in your 20s and 30s," says Bays. "Very early on we set the goal for ourselves that we weren't going to sugarcoat it or back away from something if there's a little darkness to it. Loss is a part of life."
Bays and co-creator Craig Thomas have wanted to explore loss for a while. In the planning stages for Season 6, they decided it would be an appropriate arc, setting up events throughout the first half and then letting the rest of the story unfold from the moment of the death."
Having the tragedy focus on Marshall ended up being a natural development. "Jason is such a terrific actor," says Bays. "It felt like something he could play very well. And we love Bill Fagerbakke (Marvin Eriksen Sr.). Their relationship has always been so nice, we felt like we could get the most powerful effect out of them."
Adding to the tension of the episode's tragic end, the episode featured a countdown from 50, told through strategically-placed props with numbers on them. "We knew we wanted to do something that sort of announced to the audience early on in the episode that we're heading towards a big moment," Bays says of the script, penned by Jennifer Hendriks. "It's hard to create a sense of foreboding on a 22-minute CBS sitcom. We wanted it to be a sucker punch, but we wanted to balance the sucker-to-punch ratio."
The aftermath of that sucker punch won't come until the Jan. 17 episode (written by Bays and Thomas), "Last Words." Bays wouldn't reveal much on the events of the episode, but makes the themes they want to explore quite clear.
"I really think it came out good," he says. "It's all about how to behave when your best friend has gone something like this -- and the need inside of you to figure out a way to help them."

Eric Braeden responds to NPH's insult, Neil apologizes
Braeden talked exclusively to EW about the comment and what prompted him to skip Thursday’s taping.
“I really don’t know who that fellow is. He’s a guy who stars in that series,” Braeden told EW, laughing. “It’s very unfortunate. First of all, I came back from hip surgery. I was off for three weeks. I’ve doubled my work, 30 to 50 pages a day for me, alone. Everyone knows that I’m exhausted. I was not about appear on a show for two lines, because that’s what it amounted to.”
The reason for his so-called bailing? Braeden said he only learned about the size of his part the day before the taping, which he considered unreasonable. (He believes he should have been given the scripts weeks in advance).
Braeden originally agreed to take the gig because he enjoyed his first appearance on the CBS comedy in November 2008. “I truly enjoyed working there last time,” Braeden said. “The cast and crew and producers couldn’t have been nicer.”
As for Harris, “His choice of words bothered me,” Braeden added. “It seems to me like a young whippersnapper, having seen himself on a few covers, who’s received a few awards, is now suddenly suffering from the first signs of hubris. I’ve been in the business for 50 years. I’ve seen people come and go and I’m still here.”
Braeden ultimately laughed of the whole situation. “If he is a worthy adversary, he’d better not cross my path. I will let bygones be bygones.”

'How I Met Your Mother' Spoilers for Upcoming Episodes
There's a very visible baby bump on the set of "How I Met Your Mother," but no one's paying it much attention. In a flashback scene for an upcoming episode, the ever-present narrator's memory is lapsing and he can't recall whether Lily ( Alyson Hannigan) was pregnant during the moment he's recounting. As Lily spars with Barney ( Neil Patrick Harris), her burgeoning belly remains unmentioned, serving simply as a resting spot for a plate of Chinese food.
Now in its sixth season, the show is toying with the idea of employing a device much belabored in sitcom land: the addition of a baby.
A due date is still unknown — and for some fans, that's OK. Much of the appeal of the CBS sitcom has centered on the interminable mystery of whom Ted Mosby ( Josh Radnor) will ultimately marry. But suspense can hold viewers' interest for only so long before it grows frustrating.
Baby talk has loomed over the series for a while, with longtime couple Lily and Marshall ( Jason Segel) flirting with parenthood much of this season. And in fact, hints of an upcoming pregnancy stretch as far back as fall 2009, when, in a flash forward, Ted tells his kids how his friends quit smoking: Lily stopped once she started trying to get pregnant and Marshall quit when his son was born. Even if the stork doesn't drop by this season, it's fated to happen eventually.
"I think we'd be super cute with a baby," Segel said during a set break. "We'd be like those people in the photos that come in picture frames."
Still, the show's producers are proceeding with caution.
"There's fear: Will it limit us? Will the show lose something?" admitted executive producer Craig Thomas. "However, the idea of opening up whole other stories is exciting."
TV historian Tim Brooks plays down the notion that adding a small child is a catalyst for a show's demise.
With 100-plus episodes of "How I Met Your Mother" under her belt, Hannigan said the timing is logical for TV's loving married couple.
"I love that this show has always dealt with them as a real couple. Real couples at this point in their lives are either having babies or talking about having babies."
Thomas acknowledged that they considered bringing in the baby storyline when Hannigan was pregnant in 2008. Hannigan, for one, is glad they opted against it.
"It was too soon," she said. "Just the vast amount of time we spend in MacLaren's [Pub]… it would really affect the baby. Oh, and the show."

Alex Trebek to guest star on HIMYM

"It's our twisted version of A Christmas Carol-type story," Bays says of the December 13 episode, titled "False Positive." "We see what it takes to get people back on track and start leading the life they're supposed to be leading."
Fun fact: Before finding his niche as the host of America's favorite quiz show, Trebek roomed in Los Angeles with recurring HIMYM guest and fellow Canadian Alan Thicke. "We were like the odd couple. He was the tidy one," says Thicke, who appears in the show's Robin Sparkles episodes.
