Shonda Rhimes Talks Callie and Arizona's Fate

Callie’s blunt declaration – “I’m pregnant with Mark’s baby” — came on the heels of much fan speculation and unconfirmed spoilers to precisely that effect. Could it be a final blow from which “Calzona,” already tested by Arizona’s solo jaunt to Africa, can’t recover?

Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes offered this ray of hope to the couple’s fans when TVLine spoke presented her this week with the pregnancy talk: “I’ve always said that Callie and Arizona are MFEO — Made for Each Other — and that still holds true. They are going to go through hell before they get to any sort of [semblance] of a happy ending.”

Press Tour earlier this week and requested a Calzona status report. “I’ve always said that Callie and Arizona are MFEO — Made for Each Other,” she replied. “And that still holds true.” And now for the bad news: “They are going to go through hell before they get to any sort of [semblance] of a happy ending,” she cryptically added. “If they were just happy, I don’t know who would be watching.” And with that, let the pregnancy speculation continue!

I can't debunk it, sorry, but I have heard that Callie will actually serve as the catalyst for the musical episode—meaning, that everyone is singing because of something important that is going on with Callie. It sounds to me like it might be either a dream, or something going on inside her head, which would make sense, since everyone under the sun knows that a Grey's musical episode must heavily feature the voice of the phenomenally talented Sara Ramirez. (I've heard Sara perform live and, trust me, if ever there were a reason to do a musical episode of any show, her voice is it. It's like butter dipped in magic!)

Deirdre: What's up for Grey's this week? Anything juicy?
Hearing really good things about this week's episode, and there will be at least one moment that will have everyone talking the next day (trust!). The moment isn't this one, but Bailey will get some serious smoochery, though it doesn't go over so well. Also, as the promo showed you, the race for chief resident is already on (as in, before the beginning of this episode), and guess who's been doing some spying? Hint: more than one character!

Beatrice: Will Meredith get pregnant? I feel like she might get pregnant again. How about some Meredith scoop for a change?!
From what I hear, it isn't happening anytime soon, but be patient! Mer and Der are obviously still hoping—and you shouldn't give up hope either.

ABC Renews Several Shows!

The network has officially renewed six series — Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Castle, Modern Family, The Middle and Cougar Town — through next season.

Conspicuously missing from the pickup list are Sunday staples Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters. Although DH creator Marc Cherry has a deal in place for two more seasons, the show’s core quartet — Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria — will see their contracts expire at the end of the current season. As EW reported earlier this month, negotiations are already underway on new pacts that would keep them on Wisteria Lane for another season or two.

Brothers & Sisters, meanwhile, remains firmly on the bubble. Encouraging ratings this fall led ABC to increase the drama’s episode order from 18 to 22, but insiders say there’s a 50/50 chance the Walkers will bow out in May.

In fact, she says that Arizona should just go back to Malawi! In other news, Teddy's (Kim Raver) going to the chapel and she's gonna get married. Yep, she's getting hitched to Scott Foley's character, with Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) as the wedding witness. Awkward.

First Look: Grey's Dad Stirs Up Trouble

You can always expect drama on Grey's Anatomy when Meredith and Lexie's father, Thatcher (Jeff Perry), drops in on his doctor daughters. And there's more in store on the February 10 episode of the ABC drama, when old Thatch returns complaining of stomach pains. "They suspect he's rejecting the [partial] liver Meredith gave him," says Jeff, who is unaware of the character's ultimate fate.



But what causes Lexie (Chyler Leigh) the most heartache is seeing her daddy dating Danielle (All My Children alum Alexa Havins), a heavily tattooed girl her same age. "He met her in AA," explains Jeff. "They were taken with each other and fell in love, which horrifies Lexie."

Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), meanwhile, shrugs off her father's latest escapade. "She's bemused," says Jeff. "But keeps a safe distance."

'Grey's Anatomy' Scoops on Calzona

Tell me Callie's not gonna be pregnant.Actually, we can't tell you that, because we too are freaking out about the Jan. 16 episode of Grey's Anatomy, which is rumored to be all about how "Arizona tries to reconcile with Callie, who has big news to share." Callie (Sara Ramirez) getting pregnant by Mark (Eric Dane), fulfilling her great wish—but with the wrong person—and totally complicating her relationship with Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), is exactly the kind of traumatizing plotline we've learned to expect from the writers of Shondaland. But who knows, maybe it all works out for the best? Maybe there is a Santy Claus, after all?!

'Grey's Anatomy' TV Guide on Meredith's Storyline

Question: As a huge fan of Grey's Anatomy, I'm so disappointed with the seventh season. Shonda Rhimes had promised that it would be refocused on Meredith, in contrast with the sixth season, when Ellen Pompeo was pregnant. So I hoped we could see a decent storyline for her. There was so much stuff to explore: the miscarriage, the consequences of the shooting, the building of the house, a baby, the relationship with Lexie and Thatcher, the choice of her medical specialty. But since the first episode, the only storyline for Meredith and also for Derek is about Cristina Yang! There's no storyline for MerDer. I'm aware that it cannot be as strong as the first seasons, but seriously! It seems to me that the seventh season is focused on Cristina Yang and Calzona! We see the main couple of the show two minutes at the beginning of the episode and two minutes at the end. On the other hand, we see Callie and Arizona talking about their careers, the color of their walls, the friendship with Mark. This year I have the feeling I'm watching Cristina's Anatomy and Calzona's Anatomy! I know that Grey's is not only about Meredith and Derek, but they're obviously lacking.

I don't understand the new direction of the show. The main couple became minor. Meredith seems to be only a foil for the other characters. Ten episodes to treat the aftermath of the shooting for Cristina but only one scene of two minutes for Meredith telling Derek about the miscarriage! Patrick Dempsey said Derek would be devastated by this news but I didn't see it! He was almost uninvolved. We learned that the uterus of Meredith was hostile, but since then, nothing. We know since season five that Derek is building a house but they never talk about that. I feel that the storylines that have most viewer interest get little to no development or screen time. I'm not convinced the second half of the season will be better. We'll certainly see the recovery of Cristina, her return at work, her marriage with Owen, and the journey of the reconciliation between Callie and Arizona. I'm OK with that, but I don't agree with the lack of balance in the storylines. I want MerDer too! And MerDer as a couple who build a life, who love each other and have a sex life, not as an old couple who has no more to talk about. Please tell me Shonda will do that! — Jennifer

Matt Roush: Can't speak for Shonda Rhimes, but it seems to me the reason our happy lead couple isn't as prominent lately may have to do with them being a happy couple. I agree with you that the resolution of Meredith's reveal of her miscarriage was anticlimactic, but the real issue here is that there isn't a lot of conflict in their union — occasional flare-ups on the work front, but rarely at home. And without conflict on a romantic melodrama like Grey's, there's not a lot to play. I'm OK with Grey's treating the aftermath of the hospital massacre seriously, including Cristina's psychic trauma, but as I've said in this space before, they played out her angst in particular for too long, and by the time she was flipping out as a barmaid, I was pretty fed up, so am glad it looks like that part of the story arc is over. With Callie and Arizona — I just can't bring myself to lapse into fanspeak and call them Calzona — the recent conflict was built in to give Jessica Capshaw a maternity leave. The challenge for Grey's, as with any very long-running show that burns up a lot of story each season, is to make couples like Mer and Der interesting again without putting petty-obstacle contrivances in their way. The one thing I don't want to live through again is fan fear that Shonda's going to split them up again. I'd rather them stay happy at the risk of them being a bit boring.

ABC orders another Shonda Rhimes pilot

ABC's prolific writer and producer Shonda Rhimes -- the woman responsible for creating "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice" and producing the upcoming "Off the Map" -- may soon have another series on her hands.

Deadline reports the network has given a pilot order for her untitled project about publicists working in high-profile crisis management. Loosely based on the life of communications consultant and former White House press aid Judy Smith, it's the first pilot ABC has ordered this development season.

After delivering the script to the network on Dec. 16, it took less than 24-hours to get the go-ahead.

'Grey's Anatomy' bringing on potential 'school catastrophe' in 2011

We have seen the residents of Seattle Grace on "Grey's Anatomy" tackle a number of intense situations -- from incurable diseases to shootings to even personal tragedies. Now, we are about to see some personal trauma creep its way in during the 2011 season.

According to TV Fanatic, series star Kevin McKidd (Owen) proclaimed that there was going to be some major drama coming regarding a school:

"There's a massive situation at a school, so all the training that Owen put into place suddenly makes people much more ready to handle this sort of thing."

Earlier this season, Owen's training became of the show's major highlights as a number of the panicked residents were sent outside only to discover that the entire ordeal was really just an elaborate stunt to ensure that they were all on their toes and properly trained in trauma.
