Brian Austin Green Talks 'Desperate Housewives'
Guest star Brian Austin Green, 37, returns to the hit dramedy series after a busy year: most notably, he made headlines in 2010 with his marriage to 'Transformers' beauty Megan Fox, 24. In advance of the 'Housewives' season premiere, the 'Beverly Hills 90210' alum spoke to TVSquad about what's ahead in 2011 for the cougar romance between Bree (Marcia Cross) and Keith, exercising his comedic muscles on the show, and how he once dreaded his shirtless scenes as the hunky neighborhood handyman.
Hey, Brian. Thanks for chatting today, and congrats on your 'Housewives' role.Thank you....I love working on the show, and the character's great, and Marcia [Cross] is fantastic, and I can't complain. I'm a lucky man right now.
What did you think when you heard your character was going to be the neighborhood hunk?I was dreading that.
Really?Yeah. I was. I was dreading it. It's just....I've just never played anyone labeled as a hunk in anything. I've always been kind of the lankier guy. And a lot of pressure comes with [playing the hunk].
Did you step up your exercise routine before filming?I did. I just added a routine before I shoot. You know, you have to. When you're sitting around and there's nothing but a craft-service table around you, it's a good idea every once in a while to throw in some pushups or some sit-ups, just to keep it fresh.
Many of your TV roles have been in dramas, sometimes really intense dramas. Are you enjoying the lighter scenes on 'DH'?I am! There aren't many shows that have such an equal balance of comedy and drama....You know, to play both sides within one scene and have it be funny and dramatic at the same time... It's kind of a muscle that you don't normally get to use. But it's there. It exists. I mean, think about it, sometimes the funniest or craziest stories come out of really traumatic, terrible events. And they know how to create those on ['Housewives']. Marc Cherry is a genius when it comes to this type of show.
Has it made you want to pursue more comedic roles in the future?I have to say, doing as much drama as I've done, coming off of the last show that I did that was so dramatic ('Smallville'), it definitely makes for an easier day. It's fun to kind of leave the set laughing, and thinking, 'Yeah, that was fun, that worked well. I'm glad we did that.' You don't really get that much in drama. I did one season of a sitcom ('Freddie,' starring Freddie Prinze Jr.), and that was a huge turning point for me. I think a lot of people think that they're funny, but it's not until you're on something really trying to be funny where you know if it works for you or not. So it was fun for me coming off something and feeling like, 'Yeah, comedy ... I think it works.' I think the instincts I have make sense and play well. It just opens a whole new door.
I have the least amount of comedy experience, though. I can't really take much comedy credit on this show. I mean, Marcia's so funny and Bree is such a well-sculpted character. You can kind of stick her in the room with anybody, and the scene just becomes funny.
So what's next for Keith and Bree? There was a brief breakup, but will they be together when we see them next?Well, Bree and Keith are toughing it out, which is amazing. I never thought the relationship would work as well as it does. For them, it's a real relationship, and there's definitely more fun, bumpy roads ahead. Kyle MacLachlan comes back for an episode, so we have a bit of Orson mixed in with Bree and Keith, which is insane -- possibly the most fun episode I've done so far. You get the three of them in a room together, and they they couldn't be more different. Bree being in the middle of who she was, and who she's sort of become. Definitely enjoyable.

Brian Austin Green Is Excited for Orson's "Awkward" Return
"It's taken a little getting used to, coming off of Sarah Connor and then just being the shirtless guy sanding wood and crafting things," Green tells TVGuide.com. "It felt a little slow at first — like when am I going to do something? I get it, the wood is sanded. It's smooth. Can I run around? Can I shoot at somebody?"
Luckily, Green didn't have to wait long. Even though playing Bree's handyman-turned-boyfriend, Keith, allows the 37-year-old actor to show a lighter side similar to his star-making role on Beverly Hills, 90210, producers have been quick to capitalize on Green's physical prowess. In the Dec. 12 episode, Keith came to blows with his newly single dad, Richard (John Schneider), after he grew a little too close to Bree (Marcia Cross).
The only problem? Green had to punch one of his childhood heroes. "I grew up watching The Dukes of Hazard. That was a huge part of television for me when I was a kid," he recalls. "It was a long day to shoot that, but I think it turned out really well."
Unfortunately, the run-in with Keith's dad was a sign of things to come for Bree and Keith. After turning down Keith's proposal but inviting him to move in with her, the unlikely pair will next face a visit from Bree's ex-husband, Orson (Kyle MacLachlan), in Sunday's episode.
"There's such an obvious struggle between Orson and Keith. They couldn't be more opposite than they are, so it's a really awkward, odd, entertaining experience," Green says.
Although most actors would be at least a little worried about their on-screen competition, Green welcomed the new love triangle with open arms.
"It's one of the most fun episodes I've shot. Orson is such a special character, and there is so much that Kyle has put into that," Green says. "To see him and Marcia on set working together was fun because I had seen little bits and pieces of him on the show throughout the years, and their characters meshed so well."
But the question remains: Who will Bree choose? Will she give her Orson a second chance, or will she stick with Keith despite his marital ambitions? While Keith's future on the show is uncertain (Green just signed onto a new TBS pilot), Green says he's grateful for his time on Wisteria Lane.
"I have no idea how much longer I am going to be on the show, but I'm happy to still be here," he says. "I've got to say, it's exciting to be on a show that people are watching and excited about it. That in itself is enough for me."

It is someone you already know. And can I just say for the gazillionth time after the most recent episode—in which a full-on violent riot broke out over a planned halfway house, followed by a morning-after shooting: WHY DO PEOPLE LIVE ON WISTERIA LANE? Can't they all find another lovely suburban 'hood somewhere that hasn't had murders, hit-and-runs, tornadoes, fires, plane crashes and all kinds of psychopaths circling? Or am I a bore for not wanting to live there?

Salary Raises on Wisteria Lane?
A raise for Lynette, Bree, Susan and Gabrielle may not top your Christmas list this year but for the stars of ABC’s Desperate Housewives, it certainly would help to ring in the new year. Contracts for Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher and Eva Longoria expire at the end of the season, and EW has learned that renegotiations have already begun.
ABC hasn’t officially said whether the drama will return for an eighth year but all signs indicate that it’s a sure thing: Creator Marc Cherry is committed to Wisteria Lane through 2013 and the drama remains the most-watched series on Sundays (12.9 million). It’s also the No. 1 non-sports program on the night in adults 18-49 (4.3 rating/10 share) and dominates its time period across all key female demographics. The show also commands a hefty ad rate that’s well north of $200,000 per 30-second spot and ranks among TV’s highest-rated scripted series among adults in homes with an $100,000-plus annual income.
Since the four stars earn the same amount – reports peg their salaries at roughly $400,000 each, which makes them among TV’s highest paid stars – its likely the women will negotiate together. From what EW hears, the women continue to get along well and are dedicated to seeing through Cherry’s vision. Stay tuned.
In the meantime, Cherry’s eager to find new hits for the Alphabet network. He has a script in development dubbed Hallelujah that would center on a small town “which finds itself being torn apart by the forces of good and evil,” according to Variety . Things improve, however, when a stranger comes to town “looking to bring justice, peace, and a little bit of faith” to the residents. The project is set up at ABC Studios through Cherry’s huge overall deal.

The show also commands a hefty ad rate that’s well north of $200,000 per 30-second spot and ranks among TV’s highest-rated scripted series among adults in homes with an $100,000-plus annual income.
Since the four stars earn the same amount – reports peg their salaries at roughly $400,000 each, which makes them among TV’s highest paid stars – its likely the women will negotiate together. From what EW hears, the women continue to get along well and are dedicated to seeing through Cherry’s vision. Stay tuned.
In the meantime, Cherry’s eager to find new hits for the Alphabet network. He has a script in development dubbed Hallelujah that would center on a small town “which finds itself being torn apart by the forces of good and evil,” according to Variety . Things improve, however, when a stranger comes to town “looking to bring justice, peace, and a little bit of faith” to the residents. The project is set up at ABC Studios through Cherry’s huge overall deal.

Larry Hagman to Guest Star on 'Desperate Housewives'
Polly Bergen returns to the show as Lynette Scavo's mom with a new man at her side, played by Hagman. Plus, a 'Dallas' reboot is on the way.
Larry Hagman returns to the land of primetime soaps with a guest role on ABC's Desperate Housewives, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The Dallas star will arrive on Wisteria Lane early next year as a love interest for Stella Wingfield, Lynette Scavo's (Felicity Huffman) mother, played by Polly Bergen.
"I just decided and am going to shoot next week," says Hagman, who's never seen the show, but is thrilled to be playing opposite a "big star" such as Bergen.
Indeed, Bergen received an Emmy nomination in 2008 for her portrayal of Lynette's tough-talking, hard partying mom, who famously arrived in Fairview with this line: "Where the hell do you get off having cancer and not telling me about it?" Stella later scored marijuana for her daughter as she underwent chemotherapy for that cancer. Curiously -- and coincidentally, it appears -- Hagman himself is an advocate of medical marijuana.
To prepare for the role, Hagman has taken to Hulu. "I can watch a hundred episodes on my iPad," he marvels. "I never watch television, so I better get started so I can see what the show's all about."
Hagman also confirmed that talks are still in progress for a modern-day Dallas reboot on TNT, which would include participation by Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray. Based on a script he's read, the new incarnation will "concentrate on the kids and grandkids," says Hagman. "We're negotiating right now."
