The Event Creator Dishes on Tonight's Fall Finale and Relaunch
What can you tell us about tonight's fall finale?
President Martinez will have to face what appears to be a good old human military threat. But of course it's not, and he will quickly realize that Thomas and Isabel have engineered this new crisis. Also, Sean and Leila continue their search for Leila's sister. They stumbled upon a secret basement where strange experiments were being performed on little girls, such as Samantha, all at the behest of Dempsey. At the end of the episode, Leila will discover several major answers...and she will definitely wish she hadn't. This is a really big episode for her and Sean. And for Martinez. And for the rest of the world...
How do you feel about the hiatus/relaunch?
I was a little nervous at first, but we're going to do all we can to make sure people don't forget us and look forward to our return on Feb. 28. This hiatus will allow us to return with two episodes back to back that night, and then our remaining 10 episodes each week without interruptions or repeats. And the truth is, on a show like this, even with the talented people we work with, it's very hard to keep delivering those 42-minute "mini movies" every week. I think it will be extremely helpful to our cast and crew (and writers), and it will allow viewers to experience the show without reruns.
Any plans in place yet for the new batch of episodes? Will they differ in any way from the first 10?
We've already started shooting episodes 11 and 12, which will both air on Feb. 28, directed by Jeffrey Reiner (our executive producer and house director). We've clarified the goals of our characters. Their paths are starting to cross, so expect some great scenes and storylines. We've listened to our viewers and we've pulled back on the flashbacks (we will still have them when justified by the story). And we're loosening the structural rules we had at the beginning. As far as the story, we have several great storylines plotted. The second half of the season will have a greater sense of adventure. And with a little luck...maybe you'll even find out what "the one Event" is!
Last Q, and this one from a fan named Robyn who emailed in: "Is it true that when it was first pitched the show wasn't about aliens?"
Yes. I originally wrote the pilot in 2004 as a straight, realistic thriller. It almost sold then, but then things fell through as they often do. In 2009, thanks to my friend and executive producer Steve Stark, the project was revived at NBC. They simply asked me if I'd be open to adding just a tiny bit of science fiction. Being a huge sci-fi geek myself, I said, yes, of course! I spent a few weeks revising the pilot and writing an extensive bible. And ironically, the original pilot is not that different from the 2010 pilot.

New Info about 'The Event' From Entertainment Weekly
Ratings for NBC’s high-concept drama The Event may be depressingly low, but the network (and the show’s cast) isn’t giving up. Members of the show’s ensemble told a crowd gathered at the Screen Actors Guild headquarters in Los Angeles Saturday that NBC will relaunch the show in January in an effort to attract more viewers.
“We will finish up with our first 13 and then there be a break, and then we’ll come back with a one-hour compilation clip show of the first 13 so everybody can catch up with story,” says Bill Smitrovich, who plays Vice President Raymond Jarvis. “I hope that will spark another increase in the audience.”
Since the drama’s premiere, the show has continued to trend downward in viewers and adults 18-49. The show’s most recent telecast attracted 5.4 million people and earned a 1.7 rating/4 share (each rating point represents 1.3 million people). The drama earned a full-season pickup by NBC.
“Ratings are one of the variables that we don’t have control over,” said Blair Underwood (President Elias Martinez), who also participated in the Event panel with fellow cast members like Jason Ritter (Sean), Sarah Roemer (Leila) and Ian Anthony Dale (Simon). “There is the crossfire competition from Dancing With the Stars, football, and the No. 1 comedy Two and A Half Men. Then, this is the type of genre show like 24 and Lost where viewership always picks up in the second season because people go back and watch during the summer or get the DVD. That builds an audience. And this show was sold in 200 international markets before it premiered here so there is incentive to keep the show going. We are in a good place.”
In the event The Event has to say goodbye in May, the producers have prepared short cuts to wrap up the storyline, explained Ritter. But no one thinks it will come to that. “We probably would have seen them start to come to a close. They would need the time to start doing those short cuts. But so far, so good. Ratings have not been the most ideal, but a lot of people are watching the show on their DVRs.”
Until then, exactly who are Simon, Sophia (Laura Innes) and Thomas (Clifton Collins Jr.) and where the heck did they come from? A few castmembers like Dale know the answer, but most of the others and Collins have been left in the dark. Instead, Collins has been doing some research and thinks scientific engineering may be at play here . “I’ve been doing a lot of research. I’m too intrigued,” he told the crowd. “So much of this is based on real stuff, which is why I go out there and study these things, whether it’s cloning or chromosome structures and gnomes and stuff of that nature. It’s really fascinating. I can almost see where its going. When [the producers] leak out certain things, they think I don’t know what it is but I do, because I’ve been studying.”
While Ritter thinks that Sophia and her kind may be time travelers from the future, other cast members have more (out there) theories. “I think Jason is like the second coming for the aliens,” sayd Lisa Vidal, who plays the President’s wife Christina. “He’s the second coming to this alien nation, this super human nation and there is something at stake. That’s why he is on the run. He’s like the alien Jesus.”
“That just feels right,” quipped Ritter.

When he doesn't receive the progress that he desires, Martinez decides to personally interrogate Michael Buchanan (Scott Patterson) about his involvement in the assassination attempt. While Michael holds to his claim that he doesn't know who is involved, he inadvertently reveals incriminating evidence about someone deep inside the President's staff. Meanwhile, Dempsey (Guest Star Hal Holbrook) dispatches Vicky (Taylor Cole) on a new clandestine mission. And, elsewhere, Sean (Jason Ritter) and Leila (Sarah Roemer) scramble to stay ahead of the covert ops that are trying to silence them and what they know.

Ausiello's New 'The Event' Spoilers
Question: I’m torn…I’m enjoying The Event, but I’m mildly happy that its ratings aren’t stellar. Why? Because Mr. Cyr [Jason Ritter] and Sarah were so perfect together on Parenthood! What are the chances of The Event lasting, in your expert opinion? —Wendy
Ausiello: Considering it was just picked up for a full season, the chances are good it’ll last at least 22 episodes. If the show’s ratings stabilize — or better yet grow — a second season is probably a safe bet. Chances are you’ll get closure either way. “I do have a shorter way of getting to [the endgame should it conclude prematurely],” says series creator Nick Wauters. “Hopefully it won’t come to that. But I think it’s important to give viewers some kind of conclusion.”
